Lazio beat Cagliari 2-1 to go three points clear of Inter a day after the derby loss
Lazio's comeback win over Cagliari has left Inter chasing the Serie A leaders after a single weekend. The Nerazzurri now head into a Champions League trip to Feyenoord without a share of first place.
Inter’s derby defeat has already cost them a share of first place. A late winner at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday left Gennaro Gattuso’s side alone at the top of Serie A. Inter are second, three points behind.
A day earlier, the two clubs were joint leaders. Inter’s 3-1 loss to Milan at San Siro opened the door, and Lazio walked through it at once.
Pinamonti’s late header completes Lazio’s comeback
Cagliari struck first. M’Bala Nzola gave the visitors the lead in the 21st minute. Lazio answered before halftime. In the 36th minute, Kenneth Taylor’s backheel found Tijjani Noslin. Isaksen then finished from just outside the area, with Noslin supplying the final pass.
The winner came from the bench. Pinamonti replaced Mattia Zaccagni early in the second half. In the 83rd minute, Isaksen crossed and Pedraza turned the ball back across goal. Pinamonti headed it in, according to Cagliari’s official match report.
Cagliari finished with ten men. Adam Obert received a second yellow card in the 91st minute. The referee added eight minutes of stoppage time, but Lazio held on.
Gattuso was candid about how close the game was. In his press conference, he admitted he would have been happy to take a point home. He also said he and his players avoid looking at the table because it would make their heads spin. The team will rest and then get back to work, he added.
That caution sits beside a strong start. Lazio’s pace has turned the title race into a chase for Inter after only ten matches.
Inter fall three points back after a costly derby
The derby swung in Milan’s favor early. Bastoni found the net to give Inter hope. Shortly before the break, Moreira answered from a set piece, and Milan were two goals clear again. Inter could not cut the margin after that.
For Inter, the timing makes the defeat heavier. Their main title rival pulled clear straight away. Inter now have to close the gap rather than defend a share of the lead.
There is little time to dwell on it. Cristian Chivu’s side turn to Europe before the league resumes. The trip to the Netherlands is Matchday 4 of the 2026/27 Champions League league phase.
Inter will hold a morning training session at Appiano Gentile on Monday before traveling. The club’s official pre-match press conference is scheduled for 18:45 on Monday, November 2, at De Kuip. Kickoff against Feyenoord in Rotterdam is set for 21:00 CET on Tuesday, November 3.
