Former Lazio head coach Simone Inzaghi is pleased to see his old club flourishing under the tutelage of Gennaro Gattuso.

Lazio Enjoying a Stellar Start

While some expected the Italian capital side to be involved in the relegation dogfight this season, the team has been off to a historic start, collecting 22 of a possible 24 points in the first eight rounds of the Serie A campaign. The Aquile currently share the top spot with defending champions and ultimate favourites Inter Milan, who have the advantage thanks to a superior goal difference.

Simone Inzaghi Hails Gennaro Gattuso’s Work at Lazio

Curiously, the last time the Biancocelesti topped the Serie A table was in February 2020, just before football was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with Inzaghi in charge. In his interview with Il Messaggero, the 50-year-old compared Gattuso’s Lazio version to his own from a technical and moral perspective.

I have to say that this team resembles mine quite a lot. They have similar technical and moral characteristics. What matters is the group, isolated from the rest of the world.

Seeing Lazio top of the table today makes me happy. The team are flying, Gattuso is a great coach who has settled in very well, and the victories keep coming one after another. There is something in the air that reminds me of Lazio in 2020.

We were a family, and although I am a long way away, I believe the same atmosphere is present at Formello at the moment. That is something that will always make the difference when competing against other teams. I do not know how the league will end, but Lazio are still providing some powerful emotions today.

Inzaghi Still Laments Missed Scudetto Opportunity

Inzaghi remains greatly attached to Lazio, having spent 22 years at the club between his playing days and coaching career. The Italian tactician still regrets the Covid-19 stoppage in the middle of the 2019/2020 season, as his team lost its great momentum after the restart.

I cannot help but remember that 2-0 victory over Bologna. It was decisive in taking us to the top of the table. The Olimpico was packed and erupted with joy. It felt like a collective celebration that would never end.

I remember how happy the fans were. Then came the pandemic, the long suspension, the injuries and the resumption of a league that was no longer the same as before. We did not win the Scudetto, but I was left with the knowledge that I had built a fantastic Lazio side that gave me emotions that may never be repeated.

Of course, there is one regret in my heart that I will carry with me for the rest of my life: how would it have ended without that catastrophe called Covid?

Inzaghi Forever Grateful to Lazio

Inzaghi coached Lazio’s first team between 2016 and 2021, and then had a memorable four-year stint at Inter Milan, winning six trophies and reaching the Champions League final twice. He has been at the helm of Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal since 2025, but he still considers the Biancocelesti his most beloved club.

Whenever my schedule and commitments with Al-Hilal allow, I always follow Lazio, the great love of my footballing life. I owe the club an enormous amount. I will never forget the Scudetto, nor will I forget the most difficult period, when we were facing major problems.

I owe Lazio so much and will always be grateful. I spent 22 years at Lazio, on a wonderful journey during which I was both a player and a coach. The club will never leave my heart.

Lazio should keep taking things one match at a time, without worrying about the other teams. That makes everything simpler and more enjoyable.”
