Inter’s two stoppage-time goals sink Fiorentina 2-1 and keep them level with Lazio
Marcus Thuram and Piotr Zielinski scored deep in stoppage time as Inter came from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1 at San Siro. The win keeps Inter unbeaten in Serie A and level with Lazio at the top on 22 points, with Venezia and the Milan derby next.
Inter left it late at San Siro, but they still took all three points. Fiorentina led 1-0 until stoppage time. Then Marcus Thuram equalized and substitute Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty. The comeback preserves Inter’s unbeaten record in Serie A and keeps them joint top with Lazio.
For long spells, Inter could not find a way through. De Gea and the woodwork kept them out. Carlos Augusto hit the crossbar twice. Fiorentina then scored against the run of play. Alex Jimenez struck a right-footed 30-yard shot into the top corner.
It was a harsh moment for Ivan Provedel. Making his first start for the club, he was hardly tested for more than an hour. Jimenez’s strike was Fiorentina’s first shot on target.
Chivu’s late attacking changes preceded both stoppage-time goals
Chivu reshaped his attack as the game went on. Bonny replaced Esposito in the 64th minute. Zielinski came on for Calhanoglu in the 78th. With Inter trailing and five minutes of normal time left, Chivu went all in. He sent on Lavelli for Barella in the 85th minute.
Lavelli, a striker born in 2006, played through the middle between Thuram and Bonny. Chivu said Bonny is harder for defenders to mark than Esposito. He also wanted more players in the box.
Inter struck twice once the six added minutes began. Andy Diouf set up Thuram for the equalizer. Thuram then won the penalty, and Zielinski scored from the spot to complete the turnaround.
Afterward, Chivu praised his squad’s persistence. His players “gave absolutely everything right until the end,” he said.
Comebacks have become a pattern in Inter’s season
Coming from behind is now a habit for this side. Their haul of points from losing positions already stands well clear of last season. Inter managed seven from such positions in the whole of last season, beIN SPORTS reported.
The attacking numbers were heavy. Inter had 33 shots, their most in a Serie A match this season. They have also scored in all eight of their league games.
The win followed straight on from the midweek Champions League victory over Shakhtar. The schedule stays crowded. Inter travel to Venezia on Matchday 9 at 18:30 CET on Wednesday, October 28. The derby against AC Milan follows at 20:45 CET on Saturday, October 31.
