Inter-Lazio Supercoppa, the USA option cools: the San Siro option is gaining ground. How much do the two clubs earn?
Italy's third trophy will soon be up for grabs, but the location is still uncertain.
The future of the 2026 Supercoppa Italiana remains unclear. Inter and Lazio, the two teams already certain to qualify, know the "when" after confirmation it will be played on either 22 or 23 December 2026. As for the "where", though, uncertainty remains.
At today's league assembly in Milan, the clubs were told there are concrete ideas from abroad, but no offer has yet been put to Lega Serie A. The league will therefore keep the San Siro option alive.
It will not be in Saudi Arabia and it will not be in the four-team format
One thing is certain: the Supercoppa will not be played in Saudi Arabia. The agreements with the country already included the option to pass on two of the five editions, as well as the option to move away from the four-team format.
For the 2026 season, Serie A and the Riyadh government have decided to take a break. As a result, the League Council has chosen the traditional Supercoppa format: a one-off final.
Ideas abroad
One match is easier to move and organise, even at the last minute, but time is clearly running short. In recent days, two options have gathered pace through requests for information from parties based in Morocco, a country investing heavily in sport, with state-of-the-art stadiums such as those that hosted the Africa Cup of Nations and that will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal, and in the United States, who have just concluded the World Cup. In both cases, there would also be a slot to stage the match at a suitable time for the European public.
The rules say San Siro
If plans to take it abroad fall through, Serie A will revert to the format set out in the official regulations. Unless different provisions are made, the Supercoppa should normally be played at the stadium of the club that ended the previous season as Serie A champions.
For 2026, that means Inter's stadium has been designated. Inter also won the Coppa Italia, which brings the losing cup finalists into the competition, namely Lazio. As the days pass and the deadline draws closer, the Giuseppe Meazza at San Siro in Milan is emerging as the leading option.
