Inter 3-1 Bologna – Palladino: We Needed a Second Goal
Bologna coach Raffaele Palladino said his side paid for failing to add to its lead in a 3-1 defeat to Inter, leaving the match level for the Nerazzurri to decide.
Speaking to DAZN Italia after the match, Palladino said Bologna’s main regret was missing the chance to go 2-0 up. He said: “The regret is that we didn’t score a second goal when we had the opportunity, because if you leave it in the balance against teams of this quality, you are asking for trouble.”
Bologna took the lead at the Stadio Dall’Ara through Tommaso Pobega after pressing Luis Henrique. Marcus Thuram equalised on the stroke of half-time, before Inter completed the turnaround in the second half with substitutes Carlos Augusto and Ange-Yoan Bonny helping to change the contest.
The result followed a meeting preview that had focused on Palladino’s Bologna approach. Against Inter, his side produced a strong opening spell but could not make its advantage count.
Palladino points to Bologna’s missed chance and fading intensity
Palladino said he was satisfied with Bologna’s display before the substitutions, praising the focus and courage shown in the first half. He also described Thuram’s equaliser as a marvellous piece of skill.
However, he said Bologna lost intensity as their fitness levels dropped after the break, and could no longer threaten Inter on transitions. Palladino added that he would take encouragement from the first-half performance, while stressing that Bologna needed to be more incisive.
Inter’s bench proved decisive as Bologna’s grip on the match loosened. Palladino’s account of the second half was that his players lacked the physical strength to hurt the visitors, while the substitutes helped Inter turn the game around. The Nerazzurri’s attacking approach had also been evident in their 3-0 win over Parma.
Bologna were forced into an early change when Roberto Piccoli went off and Jay Enem came on. Palladino said Piccoli had qualities that could have troubled Inter, while Enem offered a different profile and did not let the side down.
Lukasz Skorupski started in goal after Matteo Pessina had played the previous two matches. Palladino said his choice between the two keepers depended on what he saw in training, adding that the sessions were important to his decision.
Despite the defeat, Palladino said Bologna were moving in the right direction on the evidence of their first half. His immediate demand was clear: the team must become more incisive when opportunities to extend a lead arise.
