Mario Gila has revealed that he felt emotional after scoring his first goal for AC Milan in the 3-2 win over Atalanta.

Milan got into a commanding three-goal lead inside the opening hour of the game, with Goncalo Ramos scoring a penalty, Adrien Rabiot netting his fourth of the season and Gila heading in. It was his first for the club since arriving, and his celebration showed how much it meant.

The Rossoneri nearly threw away their good work though as Atalanta finished the game very strongly. Gianluca Gaetano gave them some hope, which multiplied when Nikola Krstovic scored a second for La Dea with nine minutes left. They had late chances, but ultimately Milan hung on to win 3-2.

Gila spoke to both Sky and DAZN after full-time to offer his thoughts on a game that had everything, and thankfully three points at the end. His words were transcribed by MilanNews.

It was a very intense performance…

“We started the game very well, controlling the tempo of the game well with possession. Then in the second half we collapsed a bit. But we’re happy because winning these games is important.”

There was a great team celebration for your goal…

“As I’ve said before, I’m so happy to be here at Milan. The team is amazing. Everyone gives their all, they’re all smiling, and it’s easy to work with them. I give everything, and they love me. When I scored, they all celebrated like crazy, and I was emotional. It was wonderful, yes.”

You had dominated practically the entire match…

“We dominated the entire match until the sixty-fifth minute. Then we gave up, we lost our centre of gravity a bit, we were pressing too quickly and trying to move the ball too quickly in attack. Without patience, we lost control of the game.

“It’s disappointing because I think the first half was the best we’ve had so far this season, and it’s not right to ruin the team’s feeling like that. But you have to win these games too: even when you’re not feeling well, even when things are a bit negative.

“I think great teams can see themselves in these moments, so we shouldn’t see everything in such a negative light. We also have to be able to embrace the positive side.”
