GdS: Necessities, dreams and surprises – the January mercato Milan have in mind

AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale is ready to do what is possible to strengthen the squad when the window reopens.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the Milan owner is passionate, so while he got emotional after the derby win against Inter, he was also worried following the defeat to Bologna and the limitations it exposed. So, he is ready to give Ruben Amorim a helping hand, but where?

Obsessions and dreams

Amorim said that, with the squad reduced by injuries, it’s difficult to press hard and play the football he prefers. We didn’t see that in the derby, but that’s another story.

Koni De Winter and Strahinja Pavlovic are the defenders who could use a union representative: they always play, never rest, and almost never come out early. Mario Gila is the other starter, but then Fikayo Tomori and Matteo Gabbia – the natural back-ups – are injured.

That leaves Filippo Terracciano and Sankhoun Diawara, who are more uncertainties than guarantees at present. A signing will arrive and Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inacio was the target in the summer. The asking price was €40m then, and the Rossoneri could offer it again.

The striker issue is a different story. Milan invested over €70m in Gonçalo Ramos this summer, a deal that is now viewed with some trepidation. It’s right to give Ramos time, but Cardinale has recently fallen head over heels for Nicolò Tresoldi, who scored a hat-trick against Inter in the Champions League.

Tresoldi has been a Milan fan since childhood and doesn’t hide it. Milan would gladly give him the satisfaction of playing for the Rossoneri, but Club Brugge wanted €50m in the summer and it could be more now. Moreover, the De Ketelaere and Jashari negotiations show how difficult they are to deal with.

Will there be any other surprises? A wing-back is possible if Amorim decides the left side needs more momentum, or Samuel Chukwueze finds some company in the treatment room. A goalkeeper to give Lorenzo Torriani a loan chance is possible. With Cardinale, nothing can be ruled out.
