GdS: Chukwueze, Moreira and Pulisic – Amorim prepares test for Sassuolo clash
Ruben Amorim is expected to field a new attacking trio in AC Milan’s game against Sassuolo tomorrow, prompted by the formation change.
During the long international break, Amorim has had some time to think about the best setup for Milan moving forward. After opting for a three-man backline in the first six games, it looks like he will now switch to a four-man backline.
This will also have effects in attack, where a trio behind Goncalo Ramos is now expected as opposed to two No.10’s. Today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport has taken a closer look at this (see photo below), highlighting the attacking trio: Samuel Chukwueze, Christian Pulisic and Diego Moreira.
Moreira eyes impact from start
Moreira has scored in his last three Serie A games, with goals coming off the bench, but now Amorim wants him to make a difference from start too. The first start, which was against Juventus, wasn’t a huge success and the fact he played on the right then had something to do with it.
However, the injury of Alexis Saelemaekers has definitely paved the way for Moreira to get more playing time. With the 4-2-3-1 formation, he will play as a left-winger, which means he will remain close to goal but also have space to run into.
Amorim had previously hinted that fielding both Moreira and Chukwueze from the start would pose a tactical risk, especially balance-wise, but the Saelemaekers injury has given him no choice but to try. After all, the former Strasbourg man is used to having defensive duties too.
Weight lifted for Pulisic
Moving on to Pulisic, it would be safe to say that the first weeks under Amorim’s guidance were challenging. The pre-season injury meant he couldn’t adapt to the system immediately, which in turn delayed his opportunities on the pitch.
However, he immediately made a mark when given the chance against Lazio, and the most recent game against Lecce reminded us of his class. That goal had been missing for 266 days, so there should be a great weight off his shoulders.
Further good news is that he remained at Milanello during the international break, with the clear goal of regaining full fitness. In short, Amorim will have three players who are all in good form and condition in the attacking trio against Sassuolo.
The only question is whether a defensive balance will be upheld with this trio. If it is, then this could be the way forward for Milan.
