AC Milan suffered the worst possible start to their Europa League campaign as they were beaten 2-0 by Benfica at San Siro last night.

With over 65,000 fans present at San Siro for a showpiece tie in the tournament, it was the Portuguese supporters who went home happier as Lukébakio (16’) and Kamiński (53’) fired them to a crucial round one victory. They deserved it too despite making nine changes, after a thoroughly professional performance.

The defeat means that it is already an uphill climb to finish in one of the top eight spots, and the newspapers in Italy have reacted accordingly.

La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Milan go missing. Booed on their Europa League debut, Benfica get by. Their play is lacking, their defence is disastrous, and Ramos never gets a shot on goal. The Portuguese win easily: Lukebakio and Kaminski score.”

Corriere dello Sport: “Amorim’s storm. Milan sink and are jeered. Benfica on another level. Shocking debut. Lukebakio breaks the deadlock. Sudakov hits the post. Kaminski doubles the lead. Ruben makes the wrong initial decisions and sparks discussion: ‘I don’t have the perfect players for my style of football’.”

Tuttosport: “Poor Diavolo. Milan‘s disaster under Conte’s watch. Gross errors and confusion, Ramos invisible: Amorim’s choices are perplexing. ‘I don’t have players for my 3-4-2-1? It’s partly true’.”

QS: “Milan, Europe already uphill. Benfica win at San Siro: errors and a comeback that was missing.”
