Frattesi and Gattuso from Italy’s World Cup disappointment to Lazio surprise
Lazio’s surprising start to the season has put them level on 25 points with Inter after nine Serie A games, and Davide Frattesi has been at the centre of it. He spoke about the turnaround at Italy’s training centre in Coverciano.
With strong results in their first five Serie A games, Lazio’s recent form could influence how bookmakers price their upcoming fixtures, potentially changing the value available across different markets.
During a press conference at Italy’s training centre in Coverciano, Florence, Lazio star Davide Frattesi admitted that he didn’t expect such a strong start from the Biancocelesti.
“I didn’t [expect it], also because at the start of the season there wasn’t exactly huge enthusiasm, since we were coming from the Mantova game in Coppa Italia and the conditions weren’t exactly ideal,” he said.
“I like the fact that we’ve created a good group, and that makes a difference. You bounce back from disappointments more quickly, and you can recharge.”
When, however, he was asked whether the Biancocelesti can really fight for the Serie A title, Frattesi replied with a smile: “There are the Inter and Roma lads here; you can ask them.”
Frattesi has arguably been Lazio’s standout performer so far this season, netting three goals in five Serie A appearances. Lazio had been eliminated by Serie B side Mantova in the Coppa Italia in mid-August, so seeing them with 13 points, as many as Inter and Roma, after five Serie A rounds is beyond surprising for many.
Frattesi has reunited with ex-Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso at the Stadio Olimpico, and Ringhio arguably played a big role in the midfielder’s summer transfer from Inter.
“I always felt his trust even when I wasn’t playing much for the national team,” Frattesi said during his latest press conference with Italy.
“When he called me back this summer, I didn’t think twice. I appreciate him as a person before I appreciate him as a coach.
There is, however, one thing Gattuso and Frattesi never talk about, and it’s Italy’s failed attempt to qualify for the World Cup: “I could score 20 goals this year, but it’s a wound that’s still bleeding. It will take time,” Frattesi admitted.
“We never talk about this; we’ve only talked about Lazio. We know it’s difficult for both him and me. I went to Lazio because I wanted to come back here and because he was here.”
