Everyone is crazy about Varela: Inter are studying him, Benifca can match the offer but do not have the “recompra”

The 21-year-old Portuguese striker has already scored six Serie A goals in his first season in Italy and has attracted interest from top clubs: he will be a transfer target in January.

Monza are enjoying Gustavo Varela's goals, at least until January. After an excellent start to the season, the Portuguese centre-forward has attracted the attention of several big clubs. He has scored 6 goals after 7 league rounds, despite missing one match through injury. Those goals account for 6 of Monza's 13, making him Serie A's joint-second top scorer, level with Donyell Malen and behind Antonio Raimondo, in his debut season in Italy.

Benfica and matching rights

First up are Benfica, who sold Varela in the summer. The 21-year-old has an average of one goal per game at the start of the Serie A season, making him one of the campaign's surprises. His goalscoring has attracted interest from top clubs in Italy and across Europe. Benfica held his registration while he impressed on loan at Gil Vicente last year. They let him go in the summer but retained the matching rights, giving them the right to match future offers. Interest and enquiries could develop in the coming weeks.
