Every record broken by Como in 9-1 win over Lens, surpassing Barcelona and Liverpool
Como became the first Italian club to score nine goals in a single European match and secured the largest-ever away victory in the Champions League with a 9-1 win over Lens.
Cesc Fabregas’ Como made history in many ways with a stunning 9-1 away win at Lens on Wednesday.
Every record broken by Como with 9-1 win over Lens
As Opta reported, the Lariani became the first Italian team to score at least seven goals in an away Champions League game, and the first Italian team to score nine goals in a single game in any European competition.
No team from any country had scored nine goals away in the Champions League since 1971, and only Bayern Munich had netted nine in a single match in this competition.
As Panorama reported, Como now hold the record for the most goals scored in a Champions League away game, surpassing Leo Messi’s Barcelona, who scored eight against Bayern Munich in their famous 8-2 victory in 2020.
The nine-goal haul also saw Como eclipse the previous benchmark for the biggest away victory in the competition, beating the seven-goal margins achieved by Marseille (0-7 win over Zilina in 2010), Shakhtar Donetsk (0-7 away at BATE in 2014) and Liverpool (0-7 win at Maribor in 2017).
The achievement is historic for Italian football too. Before Como’s triumph, the biggest away wins by Serie A clubs in European competitions were Atalanta’s 8-0 victory over SK Sarajevo in 2018 (Europa League play-off) and Milan’s 8-0 win against Union Luxembourg in 1961. That was technically a game in Europe’s elite competition, but it was known as the European Cup back then.
