Paolo Di Canio believes that Milan need more leadership in their side and says that it is not a surprise to see Ruben Amorim’s side struggling in the Europa League this season: ‘I was certain they’d struggle against Bournemouth, five or six of their players would be starters for Inter’.

Di Canio: ‘Who are the leaders in this Milan side? Not Rabiot or Modric’

Milan were defeated 2-0 at home by underdogs Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday evening: Their third defeat in four matches in Europe this season and one that leaves them at risk of missing out on qualification for the knock-out rounds.

The Rossoneri have also lost at home to Benfica and away against Bournemouth in the Europa League this season.

Di Canio, speaking in an interview with La Repubblica, says he always thought that Milan would find it difficult in the Europa League this season.

“They are no longer what they were 15 years ago,” said Di Canio, who represented the Rossoneri between 1994 and 1996.

“It makes me think about those who claimed they should be winning the Europa League. Look at the competition. I was certain that Milan would struggle against Bournemouth. Five or six of their players would be starters for Inter.”

Di Canio went on to question the leadership in the current Milan squad.

“Who is the leader in this Milan side? Rabiot doesn’t seem like it to me. Modric leads by example, not by temperament. In my days, if you did something wrong, there would be Baresi glaring at you and the others would grin as if to say ‘he’ll take care of it’. It wouldn’t even be down to Capello.

“The starting XI is not bad, but it’s not a team that wins the derby and is then immediately capable of winning the Scudetto.”
