“Derbies aren’t played, they’re won” – Moreira lays the gauntlet as Milan continue unbeaten streak
Diego Moreira wrote himself into AC Milan history with three contributions on his derby debut last night and it’s clear that this may be the start.
Before the game, Moreira spoke with confidence about the derby, even though he’d never played in the game before. Indeed, even before a ball was kicked, he gave a reason for the Milan fans to appreciate him more: “We’re fired up, I’d die for my team and to play these games, we’re fired up.”
With two assists and a free-kick, then, it’s clear that he wasn’t mincing his words when he said that and he’s offered another comment that fans will get behind.
Moreira’s statement
Speaking to Milan TV after the game, via MilanNews, the Belgian made a statement of intent for last night and the future. After his performance, he’s certainly able to make these comments and it shows he already understands what it means to the Rossoneri.
“I’m very happy with these three points. Today was very special for me and for the team because it’s a derby, and derbies aren’t played, they’re won. We must stay focused and stay united, because we know that every match is important.
“Whatever happens, we must stay united as a family, as a team, and that’s what we did today. As I said, derbies are very important and it’s like experiencing a different feeling. But now we must focus on the next match and we must play like we did today and, as I said, step by step, game by game.
“I believe in this team and now we must also believe in ourselves and fight together.”
He’s already – rightly – becoming a fan favourite.
