Koni De Winter, before the start of the season, may not have expected to be central this season, but he’s been key to AC Milan.

With talk of another defensive arrival on the way, De Winter spent most of the summer seen as a back up. After all, Matteo Gabbia was there and there may have been another by the end of the window.

However, as we approach the halfway stage of the season, he’s been at the core of the Milan defence. Alongside Strahinja Pavlovic, he’s rarely missed a game, and the Belgian has taken everything in his stride.

It’s clear that he’s improving each week too, and although the defence isn’t a complete article, he’s offering himself as something more than an option.

De Winter’s words

Speaking to TeleLombardia in the mixed zone, De Winter offered his views on the performance and the balance for the future.

“Today we played as a team,” as MilanNews relays, “I’m really happy we won this match. We knew we could win, and we did.”

Did you expect Inter to have so few attackers?

“When we want to and we’re all focused, we can really do well: I think you can feel that in the group too.”

Cardinale came out crying: he said you are winners…

“It’s beautiful, you can feel these games. Even the stadium, you can feel the emotion on the pitch.”

We need to find balance: what is needed?

“We have to try to be united every game, to do things right. If we do that, we’ll be really strong, but you have to confirm that in every game.”
