Costacurta angered by ‘timid’ Milan performance vs. Ferencvaros: “One extreme to another”
By: Ben Dixon
After the defeat to Ferencvaros, the mood around AC Milan has worsened significantly, as you’d expect it to.
The win against Inter at the weekend has already been diminished in importance. It still means a lot, but the significance of it has been weighed down by yet another midweek defeat against – with respect – a lesser side.
Bournemouth, Bologna and now Ferencvaros, it feels like Milan are forced to recover with a strong performance after regular letdowns in midweek. Frustratingly, or maybe not depending on your viewpoint, they normally do the hard work, too.
The redemption seems to arrive regularly, but they always find a way to need it again. So, the importance of the derby win hasn’t become something to build momentum, but rather another sign of a two-tier squad.
A disgraceful performance
Speaking after the game, Billy Costacurta – who has been nominated to enter the Hall of Fame – expressed his anger about the result, as he told Corriere dello Sport, via Football Italia.
“They were timid, one of the worst halves of the last four or five years. When you’re playing a European match, you have to go out there and do your best. The three that Amorim changed in the first half cannot start like that. How can you afford to step onto the pitch with that attitude?”
“After the derby, I did say that the difficult game would be tonight’s.
“There are good teams hiding in disguise in the Europa League. But Milan’s attitude was crazy. We’re going from one extreme to another. Rabiot also didn’t play well tonight.”
