CorSport: De Winter expected to keep Milan role as Gabbia remains on the bench
Ahead of Sunday’s game, some news has filtered through about the AC Milan defence and how Koni De Winter has kept his spot.
Over the summer, Matteo Gabbia was a mainstay in the centre of defence. However, there were worries about his ability to play how Amorim needed him to. A progressor of the ball and an anchor at the back, there were fears that the Italian was somewhat limited with the ball.
So, the search for another central defender was not a shock to anyone, really.
De Winter in defence again
In recent weeks, the defender has been sidelined with a knock, but with his pre-season minutes, he was expected to return as a starter when he was ready. However, this hasn’t been the case. After returning to training 10 days ago, he could’ve featured against Benfica.
Yet Amorim overlooked him, and he’s expected to do the same again this weekend. As Corriere dello Sport write, via MilanNews, the Italian is set to remain on the bench for another week. Retaining his spot in the middle will be De Winter, who will feature alongside Mario Gila and Strahinja Pavlovic.
We’ve seen Amorim be wary of returning players already and the international break may just give him the time he needs. Nevertheless, it’s strange that Gabbia’s first start will not be until October (at least), it seems.
