CM: Gabbia’s injury sees Milan turn to Dortmund youngster who is out of favour
AC Milan are closely monitoring the situation of Luca Reggiani, who is no longer playing regularly for Borussia Dortmund.
According to Calciomercato.com, Reggiani has gone from being a talent that was given opportunities to the bench, and now to Dortmund’s second team. The 18-year-old was used frequently by manager Niko Kovac in the second half of last season but has slipped down the pecking order since.
Reggiani has been overtaken by Joane Gadou. The 19-year-old Frenchman – signed in July from RB Salzburg for just under €20m – has immediately become a key figure in the BVB rearguard, which forces the Italian to reflect.
A change of scenery needed?
Luca Reggiani has only played two first-team matches so far, both in early September: against Hector Bremen in the German Cup and against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, for a total of 50 minutes on the pitch.
He has since not played in Dortmund’s last five matches in the Bundesliga or Champions League. He even played in Dortmund II’s – their second team – last two games, including a UEFA Youth League game in which he came off at half-time.
In the space of a few weeks, Reggiani managed to pull off a dream hat-trick last spring: his league debut in the win over Wolfsburg, a starting spot in the Champions League against Atalanta, and finally his first Bundesliga goal against Augsburg.
These impressive performances had fans considering him the ‘new Mats Hummels’, given his unique ability in building from the back. Consequently, Reggiani – despite the various offers he received during the window – pushed to stay in Dortmund and thus try to earn a leading role under Kovac.
The relationship between the two has remained good in recent weeks, but rather than increasing, his playing time has dropped to the point that Reggiani has had to look around and consider leaving during the winter transfer window.
Several clubs have begun to follow him, including Milan. The Rossoneri have entered the race following the serious injury suffered by Matteo Gabbia (who will return in 2027). Reggiani is a profile the Rossoneri are very keen on: young, physically strong, and with significant potential to develop.
A move to England is also possible, given the strong interest shown by Southampton. Everything will depend on what happens between now and December. Reggiani is happy in Dortmund but wants more space to continue developing.
