Roma are preparing to go back in for a Chelsea player they wanted in the summer – and they may have more luck this time.

The final week of the summer’s transfer window saw Roma making moves to try and sign Jamie Gittens from Chelsea.

The Blues, by most accounts, were pretty adamant they wouldn’t let their man go. They thought he could be an important player under Xabi Alonso.

However, a couple of months later and the reality is that Gittens has had just 55 minutes of action, and has yet to even appear in the Premier League. He just picked up an ankle injury on international duty with England’s Under-21 team, further limiting his game time.

Chelsea want Gittens to play and to try and retain some of his value. That Roma move looks like one they should have taken, now, and one they could get a second chance at.

Chelsea ready to accept second attempt to loan youngster

Roma fan site Forza Roma say the Italian club – who have had a better than expected start to the season – are still interested, and will push again in January for a loan of the winger.

It’s hard to see Chelsea saying no again, if the value is right. Their front 3 is settled, then there’s already Estevao agitating about a lack of game time. It’s better for everyone if Gittens spends 6 months actually playing football.

In other news…

The bulk of Chelsea’s team are back in training now, and we can start to draw some conclusions from who we’re seeing and who we’re not seeing out at Cobham.

Laurence Stewart is set to leave Chelsea after four years, an unexpected move which sees the Blues trim their bloated sporting leadership team.
