Inter 1 – 0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Carlos Augusto 77'

Half-time 0–0 · Venue: San Siro/Giuseppe Meazza · Referee: Harm Osmers

Inter beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at San Siro on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in the third round of the UEFA Champions League league stage. Cristian Chivu’s side won the game with 10 men, nine minutes after Bastoni was sent off.

A goalless first half offered little to separate the sides, and its only incident in the book was a yellow card for Shakhtar’s Oleg Ocheretko for a foul in the 36th minute.

Bastoni’s red card leaves Inter short-handed

The game grew tense after the break. Marcus Thuram was booked for arguing in the 54th minute, and Bastoni was cautioned for the same reason in the 66th. Two minutes later the defender was shown red by referee Harm Osmers, while Shakhtar’s Marlon Gomes was booked for dissent in the same minute.

Petar Sučić added Inter’s fourth yellow card in the 72nd minute for a foul, but a man down, the hosts still found a way through.

Carlos Augusto delivers the winner

In the 77th minute, Henrikh Mkhitaryan set up Carlos Augusto, who scored with his only shot of the night. His match rating of 7.63 was just behind that of goalkeeper Josep Martínez, rated 7.64, the highest on the pitch, after he made 4 saves to keep a clean sheet. At the other end, Riznyk also made 4 saves for Shakhtar.

Shakhtar had more of the ball, with 55% possession and 533 passes to Inter’s 424, but Inter created the better chances. The hosts finished with 13 shots to 12, put 5 on target to Shakhtar’s 4 and generated 1.02 expected goals against 0.58.

Inter keep Shakhtar at bay again

The win extends Inter’s dominance in this fixture. The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in their last six meetings with Shakhtar and have not conceded a goal against them in any of those games, a run that includes a 5-0 win in the Europa League in August 2020 and three straight 0-0 draws in the Champions League.

It is also a second consecutive victory for Inter in all competitions, after a 3-1 win over Bologna. For Shakhtar, the defeat ends a run of five straight wins.

Inter return to Serie A on Sunday, Oct. 25, when they host Fiorentina. Shakhtar are back in action a day earlier, welcoming Zorya Luhansk in the Ukrainian Premier League on Saturday, Oct. 24.
