Serie A leaders Lazio will be without captain Mattia Zaccagni for several weeks after reports he was diagnosed with a muscular lesion, but there was better news from teammates.

The Aquile are the unexpected team three points clear at the top of the table after 10 rounds, having broken away from Inter and the chasing pack.

Zaccagni worry for Lazio

Zaccagni limped off during the 2-1 victory over Cagliari at the weekend and it was assumed this was just a knock.

However, Sky Sport Italia and others report that initial tests have shown a lesion to the muscle in the left thigh.

More in-depth tests are required to ascertain the extent of the damage, but this type of injury generally requires three to four weeks on the treatment table.

Zaccagni is certainly out of this weekend’s Serie A showdown with Napoli and very likely the next fixture with Lecce too.

He has contributed two goals and five assists in 10 Serie A appearances for Lazio this season.

There was at least some better news for coach Gennaro Gattuso, because Adam Marusic and Nicolò Rovella were back in training today for the first time in over two months.
