Ruben Amorim spoke to the media about Milan’s important clash against Genoa, highlighting the Rossoneri’s need to be competitive.

Milan didn’t follow up the win against Inter in the best of ways, losing 2-0 to Ferencvaros at San Siro on Thursday evening. As a result, they really need to get a win against Genoa this afternoon, otherwise the boost of beating their city rivals will well and truly vanish.

Amorim has opted to make five changes to the starting eleven, switching back to a three-man backline with Yunus Musah and Diego Moreira on the flanks. Many would probably agree that it’s Milan best eleven given the injuries, so the manager clearly wants a strong response.

Amorim’s pre-match comments

Speaking to DAZN just a few minutes ago, as transcribed by MilanNews, Amorim said that the goal is simple for today’s game: to be competitive. The Ferencvaros game was far below where they need to be and they cannot afford another performance like that again.

It’s a heated atmosphere here in Genoa. What do you expect?

“It doesn’t matter. We have to respond to what we saw in the last match. We have to be competitive: that’s what I want to see today. A competitive team. We have already shown that this season.”

Have you got to the bottom of the collapse against Ferencvaros after the derby win?

“The most important thing is to use what we didn’t do in the last match and do it today. We know that Genoa are a solid team, very strong in the opening minutes of matches. They are strong in pressing and transitions.

“If you look at the last few games, we have had problems in these areas. So we need to use what we didn’t do in previous games to best prepare for this one.”

Musah is playing as a wing-back. What guarantees does that give you?

“The right foot on the left-hand side. Sometimes it’s just about the player’s characteristics and the qualities we want to have. There are many aspects.”
