Massimiliano Allegri and Napoli are primed for a key turning point in Sunday’s clash with Lazio. The team’s trust in the gaffer is starting to waver, and another loss would further compromise their position on the table.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, an early coaching change is seen as a last resort by president Aurelio De Laurentiis. He esteems the boss, but both could come to the realization that a new voice in the locker room is needed. The squad will go on retreat in Pozzuoli after spending the past weekend between Turin and Oporto.

Allegri, who was suspended for the Juventus game, lashed out at the players after the final whistle on Sunday, but that didn’t lead to a reaction in the ensuing match, when Napoli fell apart late. Matteo Politano called out the foreigners for not talking to the media afterward. Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund promptly did it later on, but publicly disagreed with the manager’s assessment of the game.

Per Corriere dello Sport, De Laurentiis headed back to Italy to take the temperature of the situation and send a message to the footballer by sticking by the boss for the time being. He didn’t take his suggestion to revamp the roster in the summer but plots to do it in January.

Our Take on Napoli and Allegri

It’s not new for him to struggle when things start to unravel, as he’s more of a peacetime general. The next transfer market window is too distant to be a real solution, but perhaps the numerous injuries will give him a lifeline and buy him more time, even if they fall again.
