AC Milan condemn racial abuse directed at Maignan after red card: “Unacceptable”
AC Milan have published an official statement on their website, condemning the racial abuse that has been aimed at Mike Maignan on social media.
It was a rough evening at work for Maignan against Bournemouth, receiving a red card 27 minutes into the game. It definitely put Milan in a difficult spot and the home side were able to coast to victory from there.
Naturally, there have been some reactions from the fans, with most agreeing that the goalkeeper’s actions were incredibly silly and not worthy of the captain’s armband. However, some fans took it way too far.
Milan’s official statement
This evening, Milan published a statement on their website to condemn the racial abuse that has been sent to Maignan on social media.
“Following yesterday’s fixture against Bournemouth, Mike Maignan has been subjected to serious and unacceptable racist abuse on social media.
“AC Milan strongly condemns all forms of racism and discrimination, which are unacceptable and have no place either on or off the pitch.
“The Club expresses its full solidarity and support for Mike and reaffirms its ongoing commitment to promoting the values of respect, inclusion and equality. These are the values of AC Milan.
“Finally, we need to stand together as Milanisti and as a league. The only way we can restore Italian football to where it belongs is by coming together and embracing the best of what we can be, both individually and collectively. We all want to win, but we need to win the right way with dignity, mutual respect and class,” the statement reads.
Sadly, racism remains an ongoing battle in the football world and Maignan has been on the receiving end quite a few times during his adventure in Italy.
