US Pundit with perfect summation up of what’s wrong with Celtic in midst of Lisbon defeat to Benfica…

Gauging the reaction from the world media in the aftermath of our disappointing defeat by Benfica was interesting, with one man’s analogy of things absolutely spot on.

Several outlets from around the globe were scathing in their assessment of Celtic’s recent European tragedy, but it was a reporter from across the pond in the USA whose take on things caught my eye, and I’m sure most of you will agree with his opinion.

CBS sports Scottish reporter Ian Joy, a former USA youth international hit the nail on the head with his take on not just last night’s poor performance, but the all round state of play at Celtic football club.

Joy who has a Scottish mother, played for Stirling Albion, Montrose, as well as St Pauli in a long career before becoming a prominent media figure in the states, and he didn’t hold back on his take on what’s happening at Celtic at this moment in time.

“I will just go on a small rant, Celtic right now are unrecognisable to me,” he said. “They have lost four of the last five games. Yes, they are top of the Scottish Premiership, well done, but I consistently repeat myself, they are not competitive enough on the European stage.”

“There is no faulting the heart and the effort of Celtic in this game. They had as many shots on target as Benfica in this game. But you must be kidding me, if you don’t invest in the team properly to compete in European football, you will get nowhere.

“I am completely p’eed off. I am always frustrated when I see these kind of results. If you look at what they have done over the last three European games, both Europa games and the embarrassment against LASK. They’ve conceded 12 goals in three games. It’s unacceptable and Scottish football pays the price for this. Which makes me annoyed.”
