Torreense boss sends Celtic warning ahead of crucial Europa League showdown
New Torreense manager Joao Nuno insists his side are determined to continue their remarkable Europa League campaign when they welcome Celtic to Portugal later this month.
Martin O’Neill’s side will travel to Leiria for their next European fixture, with the match taking place around 50 miles from Torreense’s home in Torres Vedras due to their 2,000-capacity stadium failing to meet UEFA requirements.
The Portuguese second-tier outfit, who currently sit 12th domestically, recently appointed Nuno following the dismissal of Luis Tralhao, despite the latter guiding the club to a historic national cup triumph over Sporting Lisbon last season.
Torreense have exceeded expectations in Europe, sitting 19th in the Europa League standings compared to Celtic’s 32nd position, with the Portuguese side firmly in contention for a play-off place.
Nuno enjoyed a remarkable start to his tenure on Thursday night as his ten-man side secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Ararat Armenia, scoring twice in stoppage time despite playing more than an hour with a numerical disadvantage.
Speaking after the victory, Nuno said: “That was an unforgettable night for everyone at Torreense, for the people at the club.
“Given how the season has gone, it was an important win for the fans. Everyone identified with what we are trying to do.
“It was an absolutely epic victory and I could not ask for a better debut as a manager.
“Celtic are next here, so we will fight to do everything to try to get points and try to win the game.
“Let’s continue our dream because we have done beautiful things in Europe this season.
“We want to continue fighting to dignify Portuguese football and I think today we lived up to its standards and the Portuguese people can be proud of us.”
