Tom Boyd ‘had a proper pop’ at Celtic stars following humiliating Rangers defeat
Jonny Hayes has revealed how Celtic legend Tom Boyd tore into the Hoops’ former stars following their humiliating 7-1 defeat to Rangers at the Tennent’s Sixes.
The Celtic legends suffered a heavy defeat to Barry Ferguson’s Rangers side during Saturday’s group stage, leaving the dressing room stunned.
However, the Hoops recovered to beat their Glasgow rivals 5-4 in the final just 24 hours later, securing the trophy in dramatic fashion.
And Hayes has now lifted the lid on the furious dressing room reaction from Celtic ambassador Boyd following that opening-day embarrassment.
Speaking to the Scottish Football Social Club, Hayes revealed: “Obviously Tam was raging. We were all sitting in silence. I will be honest, we were embarrassed. We were sitting there in the back room, walking about… nobody said a word to anybody.
“So, Tam has come in and had a pop at us. I feel like I’m in school – like it’s Terry Butcher having a go at me again. So, Tam has a proper pop, and it’s more like ‘I’m disappointed more than angry.’
“Nobody said anything.”
Hayes explained that former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew eventually broke the tension with a joke, although Aiden McGeady was far from amused by the result.
He continued: “Then Charlie said ‘I’m not employed by the club, he can’t shout at me like that’ – and that just broke the ice.
“We had a laugh, but at the same time Aiden – you could see Aiden is competitive. I don’t think Aiden spoke to anybody for about half an hour after that game. Even when you start talking you could see he was seething.”
Despite Celtic’s eventual triumph, Hayes was unable to fully enjoy the celebrations after suffering a foot injury during the tournament.
The former Hoops winger revealed he was forced to visit hospital after playing through the pain, where doctors discovered a fracture.
He explained: “I missed out on the celebrations, I had to go to A&E. All of the staff who were there (at the tournament) recommended I should get an X-ray.
“I was dying to get home but I went up to A&E and they found a small crack on my foot.
“It was 2-1 at half-time and I was just itching to get back on. I took a couple of steps and it didn’t feel right but we scored pretty much right away and then I thought I’ll just see it through.”
