Sebastian Tounekti must consider a change of position to save Celtic career
Celtic star Sebastian Tounekti would be wise to consider a change of position to rescue his career at the club. It has been a tough time for the left-winger, who has struggled to deliver consistent performances this season despite opportunities aplenty.
Tounekti has been heavily criticised, and while some of it has been fair based on his output, there has been a portion of criticism that has been way over the top.
Technically speaking, Tounekti is a good player. He has a nice ability with the ball, and it's not fair to dismiss that just because he is not doing enough at the top end of the pitch. But that part is true. Tounekti has been poor in the final third, often shying away from taking on his man, while his delivery has been disappointing more often than not.
The injury issues of Jota and Yang Hyun-jun early in the season have given him plenty of opportunity to turn that around, but he hasn't been able to.
And now the winger may have missed his opportunity, with Jota nearing full fitness and Yang also closing in on a return, while Callum Osmand has also impressed on the left.
Tounekti suddenly finds himself as the fourth option, and there is no sign of that changing, based on how he has squandered opportunities. But we haven't seen anything of Tounekti on the right, where he may have more success playing on his favoured foot, driving down the line rather than relying on cutting inside and getting found out quickly.
Haissem Hassan is going to start there more often than not, and we have seen Camilo Durán play there plenty due to the out of form Kasper Hogh starting centrally too often.
But with James Forrest not having Tounekti's pace or ability at this stage of his career, Tounekti's chances of getting minutes would undoubtedly increase on the other side.
And after all, we need to see something different from the winger, so why not play him somewhere different? Like with Hogh, there is too much of doing the same thing and hoping it will change in this Celtic side. We need some creativity, and you wonder whether Tounekti can be helped on his way back to form by a little rotation.
He still won't see regular starts, but it saves him relying on three injuries on the other side, which may currently be the case.
