Scott Brown believes Celtic have the perfect opportunity to make amends for their Ibrox disappointment when Rangers visit Parkhead this weekend.

Martin O’Neill’s side were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup quarter-final, with Rangers controlling long spells as Celtic struggled to impose themselves.

Even former Rangers striker Ally McCoist admitted he had not anticipated such a one-sided encounter.

Speaking alongside former Celtic captain Brown on Ally Meets, McCoist said via talkSPORT: “I’m going to be honest, I couldn’t see that coming.

“On their day any of the teams can win it, but I didn’t see Rangers dominating the way they did.”

Celtic will not have to wait long for an opportunity to respond, with the sides meeting again at Celtic Park just seven days later in the Premiership.

Brown knows better than most how quickly the momentum surrounding a Glasgow Derby can change and believes O’Neill’s players must use the defeat as motivation.

Brown said: “A lot of things didn’t go right for Celtic, but we have all had a bad game.

“They get the bragging rights for that whole week, but Celtic have got that opportunity now to put it on the back-burner and say, ‘Right, we have went there and been battered, and now we need to prove a point with Rangers coming to Celtic Park.’”

McCoist agreed that the quick turnaround provides Celtic with an immediate opportunity to respond to a painful result.

He said: “I think, Broony, in many ways that is the beauty of the Celtic and Rangers games.

“Although that is a sore one, there is normally one not too far away that gives you a chance to get right back at it.”
