Rangers face Premier League interest in summer signing after award-winning displays
Rangers are reportedly facing Premier League interest in one of their summer signings after a bright start to life at Ibrox.
Derek McInnes side sit second in the Scottish Premiership, two points behind Celtic, although there is optimism that their summer business could help them overcome their rivals to secure a first league title in six years.
One of those signings included Olwethu Makhanya, who joined the Gers from Philadelphia Union for €3.5 million and the defender has immediately become a mainstay in the club’s defence.
Makhanya was named the Scottish Premiership Player of the Month after leading Rangers to three clean sheets in four games in September and TEAMtalk report that this has attracted the attention of scouts from several leagues, including the Premier League.
Brentford and Sunderland are believed to have sent representatives to watch Makhanya in action during Rangers’ recent 3-1 win over Kilmarnock, while Bologna have also taken interest along with sides from Spain including Sevilla.
However, Rangers are said to feel ‘no pressure to sell in the short-term’ and would only consider offers that reflect his rapid development, with any move only likely next summer as opposed to in January.
Olwethu Makhanya: New Rangers defender tipped for La Liga move
A four-time South African international, Makhanya became his career in his native country before moving to the MLS with Philadelphia, where he won the Supporters’ Sheild in 2025.
Makhanya’s composure on the ball, pace and ability to step into midfield have attracted attention and a top LaLiga scout is alleged to have told TEAMtalk that the player’s profile is ideally suited to their league due to his athleticism and technique.
Several clubs in Spain have followed the centre-back’s performances closely since his move to Rangers, viewing him as a potential long-term option who could develop further in a more possession-based environment.
However, Rangers are in a strong position, with the Scottish giants having the option to keep Makhanya contracted until 2031 and it remains to be seen whether the defender can keep progressing and attracting more attention as the season goes on.
