The 2026-27 Scottish Premiership season kicks off on Friday evening at Tannadice Park, where Dundee United take on Rangers.

It is a new era for the Gers, who brought in manager Derek McInnes this summer along with a raft of signings as they aim to lift the league trophy for the first time since 2021.

Dundee United have also been busy in the transfer market, bringing in nine players to date, and they will feel optimistic of taking something from this contest.

Team news

The home side are missing Miller Thomson for this opener because of an ankle issue, but summer arrival Jesse Randall is set to make his Scottish Premiership debut.

Rangers will be without Nicolas Raskin following his World Cup exploits with Belgium, while Vanja Dragojevic is unlikely to be available due to visa issues.

Thelo Aasgaard is expected to feature despite picking up a knock to his shoulder against West Ham in the club's final pre-season match, while new signings Ivor Pandur, Ben Godfrey, Cammy Devlin and Lawrence Shankland should play some part.

The stats

Dundee United are unbeaten at home in their last 10 matches (W7 D3).

Both teams to score landed in 63% of the Terrors' 19 home league games last season.

Rangers lost two of their last three away games in the 2025-26 campaign.

The Gers scored 37 away goals in the league last season, the highest in the division.

Dundee United drew 2-2 against Rangers in the last meeting at Tannadice in December 2025.

Two of the last three meetings have ended in 2-2 draws.

Prediction

There has been lots of positivity surrounding Rangers heading into the new season, with manager McInnes offering a fresh approach after his arrival from Hearts and the club making a number of additions to the squad.

Shankland, Devlin, Godfrey, Pandur, Dan Neil, Ross McCrorie and Dragojevic have all arrived at Ibrox and there is still the hope that at least another couple of players will be brought in before the transfer window shuts.

But there is a feeling they are still adapting to the methods of the former Hearts chief, who has the added expectation to deliver the title.

While Rangers have gone unbeaten through pre-season, winning three and drawing three, competitive action is a step up and any rustiness in the opener could be exposed by Dundee United.

The Terrors have already played four Scottish League Cup matches, collecting nine points to top Group B and set up a last-16 tie against Celtic.

Dundee United won both of their home assignments in the cup to nil, beating Arbroath and Spartans, and those results have extended their unbeaten run at Tannadice to 10 games.

Jim Goodwin's side have not beaten Rangers since 2021, but two of the last three meetings have ended in 2-2 draws and Friday's hosts look capable of getting a similar result from this clash.
