McKenna or Bellamy both perfectly suitable as next Celtic manager
Even the mere suggestion of Neil Lennon being a potential successor to Martin O’Neill as Celtic manager is alarming. Surely we’ve got to be aiming so much higher?
Question marks have been raised once again over the future of Martin O’Neill in the wake of recent results, with some names even being mentioned as possible successors.
Next Celtic manager – Neil Lennon is current favourite
One supposedly leading candidate refuses to go away and that hasn’t gone down too well with the Celtic supporters, and with good reason. That’s Neil Lennon, who is a bookies favourite with some betting sites to replace former mentor Martin O’Neill if the veteran Irishman were to step aside. Lennon was a 33/1 outside but is now a 3/1 favourite with many bookmakers.
Neil Lennon for me is a Celtic legend
Listen, Neil Lennon for me is a Celtic legend for the contributions he made to the club as player and indeed as a manager, I don’t think that can be denied. But he’s yesterday’s news and if hiring him on a second occasion which the club decided back in 2019 was a mistake, then bringing him back for a third spell would not only be incredibly lazy but it would be a blunder of catastrophic proportions.
Dermot Desmond’s little black book
I mean, would the club be looking at a guy in charge of a Scottish Championship side if his name wasn’t Neil Francis Lennon? No, of course not so it would be nothing more than yet another name in Dermot Desmond’s little black book.
As good as he was for the club over the years, Lenny is yesterday’s news, and what we require in the dugout is an ambitious figure, one who has fresh ideas and would be looking to make the side look like one that is tactically assured.
Football is a results business – Martin O’Neill knows that
Neil Lennon isn’t that man, and I think I speak for a vast number of Celtic supporters when I say that he would be a most unwelcome choice should Martin O’Neill stand down or be relieved of his duties due to results continuing to be poor over the next five days.
McKenna looking for next challenge, Bellamy impressing with Wales
What Celtic actually needs is a name such as Kieran McKenna, someone who has been regularly linked with the job, or perhaps even Craig Bellamy, who has impressed at Wales and has them playing some lovely football. Either of those two would excite the Celtic supporters and rejuvenate a playing squad in desperate need of some fresh ideas, modern coaching and bring overall stability to the squad.
It’s maybe a stretch for anyone to say that Martin O’Neill has lost the dressing room and also the support but there have been three of four players speaking out, others looked unhappy or simply baffled and so many don’t know the position that they are being asked to play in.
Celtic will be underdogs at home to Besiktas
Celtic will be underdogs against Besiktas on Thursday night. The Istanbul side are unbeaten in the Europa League with seven points from three games while Celtic are pointless after three straight defeats, two of which were at Celtic Park. Losing that will be bad but failing to beat Kilmarnock on Sunday ahead of the next international break could be the proverbial straw…
High hopes for difficult transfer window
From what little we have read about last night’s Q&A at the Greenock Celtic Supporters Club, there seems to be no threat to MON’s job internally and both himself and the Board seemed to talk up heavy spending in the January transfer window.
We have of course all heard that before and await the observation that it’s actually a difficult window to sign quality players as club’s are reluctant to sell their best talent mid-season. Rinse, repeat and file it away until January 2028.
