The 23-year-old defender has started Celtic’s last five matches amid injury concerns surrounding Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty, establishing himself as a regular in O’Neill’s backline.

Murray has played a key role in recent Premiership victories over Hearts and Hibs, with the Celtic boss delighted by his development after a difficult period disrupted by injuries.

Asked whether Murray could eventually force his way into Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad, O’Neill refused to rule out the possibility.

“He’s missed essentially two years with injury. He’s got all the potential in the world to be a really fine centre back,” he said via The National.

“You have to realise that potential, and eventually, for what he does in his career, will be entirely up to him. He has potential, and he’s missed the two years.

“And I’m delighted for him, because he’s a splendid character. As for Scotland? Why not, why not?”

Murray’s emergence has provided Celtic with a welcome defensive boost, particularly during a period when O’Neill has been forced to contend with several absentees.

However, Carter-Vickers made his return from injury during Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Hibs at Easter Road, potentially increasing competition for places in the coming weeks.

Despite the American international’s return, O’Neill was keen to emphasise his satisfaction with Murray’s recent contributions.

“I think big Dane has done really fine, we’re just trying to get Cameron and Alistair just back into the fold again. Hopefully, if Cameron’s okay, which he didn’t complain about it, that’ll be good news for us if he’s come through that.

“Of course, we need every single body back. He seems to have come through the game okay. I’m delighted that the big players are back.”
