Martin O’Neill explains Haissem Hassan Celtic selection decision after Dundee United draw
Martin O’Neill has explained his handling of Haissem Hassan’s playing time after the winger impressed during Celtic’s 2-2 draw with Dundee United at Parkhead.
The Hoops surrendered an early lead after Camilo Duran opened the scoring, with quickfire goals from Zach Sapsford and Neil Farrugia putting Jim Goodwin’s side ahead before the interval.
O’Neill introduced Hassan and Jota at half-time, with both making an immediate impact as Celtic dominated the second period.
Liam Scales eventually headed home Jota’s delivery to rescue a point, but the Scottish champions were unable to find a winner.
Speaking to BBC Sportsound, O’Neill admitted his side had been punished for a poor first-half spell.
He said: “We just fell asleep. Conceded the goal, conceded another one, got back in for half-time, regrouped, and I thought the second half was very, very strong.”
The Celtic boss reserved particular praise for Hassan, who caused Dundee United problems throughout the second half.
O’Neill said: “Although, having said that, Hassan has caused havoc in the second half. He’s crossed some great balls, we should be getting on the end of one or two.”
Asked whether the summer signing deserved more opportunities from the start, O’Neill insisted the winger was still adapting to Scottish football.
He explained: “He has started matches. Yes, he’s come on and made an impact, and that’s good. But he’s only been here for a couple of months and he’s getting to grips with the Scottish game.”
O’Neill added: “I think we just have to move on. Big, big match on Sunday now against Falkirk, and we just have to take it. Now it’s gone, it’s all over, so we’ll just be ready for Sunday.”
