Martin O'Neill backs Celtic star with 'all the potential in the world'
Celtic boss Martin O'Neill believes Dane Murray could be good value for a Scotland call-up after his form for the Bhoys over the last couple of weeks.
Murray has had a tough time with injury over the last few years, but he has managed to stay fit this season, and he is getting some opportunities.
Cameron Carter-Vickers has dealt with a muscle strain over the last couple of weeks, and Auston Trusty has missed the last couple due to the passing of his father.
Murray has deputised, and he has done a solid job, with his only notable mistake being switching off for a quick free-kick for the Hibs opener on Sunday, but he wasn't the only one.
There are now whispers for the young defender to get a call-up for his nation for the first time in the upcoming international window, which starts a week on Monday, and O'Neill is in favour of it.
“He’s missed essentially two years with injury. He’s got all the potential in the world to be a really fine centre back,” he said via The National.
“You have to realise that potential, and eventually, for what he does in his career, will be entirely up to him. He has potential, and he’s missed the two years. And I’m delighted for him, because he’s a splendid character. As for Scotland? Why not, why not?”
Murray's height is plenty helpful at the back, standing at 6ft4", and he is also a threat in opposing boxes. He will likely slip back to the Celtic bench once Carter-Vickers and Trusty are both back, while Liam Scales is also likely a little ahead of him, with the Irishman playing well currently.
But he is right there competing with those players and certainly not far behind, keeping in mind he is only 23 years of age and has missed lots of time through injury.
He will be looking to catch up with his development over the next year or two, and he should get playing time at Celtic Park if he keeps playing as he has been over recent weeks.
