Luke McCowan backed to overcome Celtic struggles amid Martin O’Neill selection snub
The midfielder has struggled for regular opportunities at Parkhead this term and was omitted from the matchday squad for Celtic’s recent victories over Motherwell and Hearts.
With competition for places intensifying in O’Neill’s squad, McCowan faces a challenge to force his way back into contention.
However, Docherty, who worked closely with the midfielder during their time together at Dundee, believes his former captain possesses the mentality to overcome his current difficulties.
Speaking on Open Goal, Docherty revealed he had recently spoken with McCowan about his situation at Celtic.
He said: “I saw him yesterday and we had a good chat. We keep in touch regularly. That can be difficult.
“I know he’s going through a bit of a tough time at the moment.”
He added: “All through his career he’s been resilient and faced adversity, so I would back him to get through it.”
McCowan established himself as a key player under Docherty at Dundee, eventually earning the captaincy before securing his dream move to Celtic.
The Scotland Under-21 boss admitted he was emotional when the transfer materialised, having witnessed firsthand just how much representing his boyhood club meant to the midfielder.
Docherty explained: “I was actually quite emotional about it. We were in pre-season and we knew about interest from Celtic.
“It was his boyhood dream to play for Celtic.”
“I missed him personally, but for him it was brilliant.”
