Kasper Hogh’s Celtic difficulties explained as Martin O’Neill receives tactical advice
Former Celtic defender Vidar Riseth believes Kasper Hogh can still play an important role under Martin O’Neill despite struggling to replicate his prolific goalscoring form at Bodo/Glimt.
The £11million record signing has endured a frustrating start to life at Celtic Park, with questions surrounding his impact since arriving in Glasgow.
However, Riseth believes the Danish striker’s difficulties can partly be attributed to the different demands placed on him in O’Neill’s system.
Having watched Hogh flourish in Norway, the former Hoops defender reckons his physical presence could prove just as valuable in creating opportunities for his teammates.
Speaking to SunSport, Riseth said: “Hogh is a big, strong target man. When he played for Bodo, they played a different style that worked for him.
“I think he’d like to get more crosses, as he did at Bodo, because he’s such a big lad with a good finish. Now they’re playing more up to him and asking to get the ball back again, so it’s different for him, but the most important thing for Martin is Celtic winning games.
“If Martin wants to use Hogh as a way to give more space to other players, then that’s the best way to use him.”
Hogh demonstrated his quality on the European stage during his time at Bodo/Glimt, scoring in Champions League victories over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid.
And Riseth insists the 25-year-old does not necessarily need to find the net himself to make a meaningful contribution, highlighting his ability to occupy defenders and create space for others.
He added: “Sometimes at Bodo he didn’t score the goals, but there’s always one or two defenders on him all the time. That gives space to the midfield and to other players to come through and score the goals.
“If he works hard and does a good job, it doesn’t matter who scores.”
