Hibernian vs Celtic match preview

Can Celtic bounce back following another miserable European night? On Thursday, the Hoops suffered a third defeat out of three in the Europa League, this time defeated 2-1 by Celta Vigo at Parkhead, despite taking the lead through Mika Baur. Never before has a side progressed through the competition's league phase after starting with three consecutive loses, underlining the uphill battle this team now faces.

Overall, that is now five defeats in seven for Martin O'Neill's team although, just glancing at the league table, one could be forgiven for assuming it is business as usual. Last Sunday, the Celts demolished Heart of Midlothian 7-1 at home; Benjamin Nygren and Callum Osmand both with braces, while Tierney, Baur and Camilo Durán were also on target.

Thus, the champions start the weekend top, four points ahead of Rangers, albeit that gap will have been slashed, assuming Derek McInnes' side beat St Johnstone at Ibrox on Saturday. So, will Celtic make it nine wins out of ten to start the Premiership season as they head to the capital?

As for Hibernian, they sit rock-bottom of the table, despite finishing in the top five in four of the previous six seasons. Club legend David Gray was thereby sacked as manager last month, but fortunes have not improved under Marink Reedijk, perhaps even worsened. Last weekend, Hibs were beaten 2-1 by Falkirk at home, a disastrous result.

Thus, since beating Rangers and then Dundee in August, Hibernian have accumulated just a solitary point from six Premiership outings. In a week's time, the Hibees will be at Hampden to face fierce rivals Hearts in the League Cup semi-finals, but this might just be an occasion supporters are currently dreading. So, can they spark their season into life with a win over Celtic?

Hibernian team news

Marink Reedijk is currently without Adam Mayor and Rocky Bushiri due to injury, but both Nicky Cadden and Jamie McGrath came off the bench against Falkirk in a double boost. Meantime, winger Rabbi Matondo, who once scored an Old Firm rocket against Celtic, has come off the bench in the last two matches, so could start for Hibs for the first time here.

Celtic team news

There is still no Alistair Johnston nor Cameron Carter-Vickers for Martin O'Neill, so Colby Donovan and Dane Murray will continue to deputise at the back. Meantime, O'Neill keeps chopping and changing his goalkeepers, with Sam Johnstone getting the nod over Viljami Sinisalo on Thursday, but your guess is as good as ours when it comes to who will be donning the gloves here.

Further forward, Jota has come off the bench against Motherwell and Hearts, hoping for more minutes here. Callum Osmand's double last weekend saw him start in mid-week, so will he once again get the nod over Sebastian Tounekti, James Forrest and Kasper Høgh? Yang Hyun-jun remains sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury during the Asian Games.

Predicted Line-ups

Hibernian predicted lineup: Sallinger; Passlack, Kerr, Ivezić, Cadden; Mulligan, Chaiwa, McGrath; Boyle, Klidjé, Šuto.

Celtic predicted lineup: Sinisalo; Donovan, Murray, Scales, Tierney: McGregor, Baur, Nygren; Hassan, Osmand, Durán.

Score prediction: Hibernian 1-3 Celtic.
