Former Celtic star considering shock career change after hanging up his gloves
The Danish international retired from professional football after leaving Celtic in the summer, bringing an end to a successful spell in Glasgow that saw him win two Scottish Premiership titles and a League Cup.
Schmeichel, who turns 40 next month, underwent shoulder surgery before calling time on his playing career and is now exploring several opportunities away from the pitch.
The former Hoops shot-stopper has admitted that platforms such as Twitch and YouTube appeal to him, although he is also undertaking coaching qualifications and studying football club management.
Speaking about his future, Schmeichel said via the Scottish Sun: “My new career will be good, but I want to give myself time for it.
“I have a few ideas that may or may not come to fruition. I can’t say much yet, but it’s coming. I think Twitch or YouTube could be interesting.
“But I want to do something in football too. I’m taking my coaching courses and I’ve entered FIFA’s executive program, which prepares you to run a football club.
“I’m unemployed now, so there are no guarantees. I have to try to plan, and I’m trying to teach my children that things cost money. Everything in the world has become extremely expensive. Shopping costs a fortune.
“I’ve been lucky, I’ve grown up without lacking anything. Money has never been a motivation, and it hasn’t changed my life in a big way.
“But money should be respected. If you work hard, you deserve it.
“For me, there are no more shoulder surgeries, so now my rehabilitation is in full swing – the goal is a skiing holiday with the family this winter.”
