Former Celtic defender Ramon Vega has officially announced his candidacy to become the next president of FIFA, calling for fundamental changes to the governance of world football.

The 55-year-old former Switzerland international confirmed his intention to stand in the presidential election, scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco.

Vega enjoyed a memorable spell at Celtic during the 2000/01 season, playing his part in Martin O’Neill’s historic Treble-winning campaign before moving into business following his retirement.

Now, the former Hoops defender has set his sights on football’s most powerful position, launching his campaign with a pledge to restore integrity and trust in the sport’s governing body.

Declaring that “football belongs to the people”, Vega said: “After more than a decade of preparation, I formally announce my candidacy for the Presidency of FIFA in 2027.

“I bring the mentality of a player, the discipline of a defender and decades of experience from the pitch to the boardroom.

“I defended my team on the field. Now I am ready to defend football itself, its integrity, its people and its future.”

Vega also stressed that his decision was not driven by “personal ambition, power or privilege”, insisting his campaign represents an opportunity to reshape the future of world football.

He added: “No individual is greater than football. No institution should ever place itself above the game.

“This is not merely an announcement of candidacy. It is a call for fundamental change, a commitment to reconciliation and a vision for a new era of world football.”
