Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson has admitted that a dream transfer to Rangers is inevitable after strong links in the summer.

The Scotland international has carved out a sensational career for himself in Italy. Ferguson has captained Bologna, won the Coppa Italia and even played Champions League football with the Serie A side.

This season, the 27-year-old has firmly regained his importance to the team after a mixed time under Vincenzo Italiano last season. Ferguson wasn't always a guaranteed starter, as he was still in the process of trying to recapture his previous form after an ACL injury.

This term, however, he is back to looking like the Ferguson of old. The midfielder has played the full 90 in all of Bologna's games, and the team's results are now improving after a difficult start.

Bologna went into the season with Domenico Tedesco at the helm, but he was sacked after just four games (one draw, three losses) and replaced by Raffaele Palladino, who has won four of his six games in charge. His only loss came against reigning champions Inter.

Ferguson: Rangers move is inevitable

In the summer, Ferguson was strongly linked with a move to boyhood club Rangers. The former Aberdeen man comes from a family of club legends, and he previously starred under new manager Derek McInnes during his four-year spell with the Dons.

Despite the appeal of returning to the Ibrox club, where he spent time as a youngster between 2009 and 2013, no transfer materialised. Ferguson, as confirmed by his agent, was open to a summer exit from Bologna but wanted to remain in a top-five league. He ultimately stayed put.

The dream of playing for Rangers isn't dead, however. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Ferguson confirmed that he will eventually end up moving back to Glasgow.

"Let's just say I'll go there sooner or later; I know it'll happen someday," the 27-year-old said before insisting that he is fully focused on Bologna: "The only thing that matters is the present: now we've recovered, and we have to take advantage of the momentum."

When asked whether this is his last year at the club, he deflected. "I'm certainly not thinking about how long I'll stay, but I'm definitely thinking about how I'll stay," Ferguson explained. "Bologna has been home since day one, and I repeat, I'm feeling great here."

The midfielder admitted that he did consider a transfer in the summer, saying: "I took some time. I had some ideas, yes, but I wanted to figure out what to do with my life, whether to take a different path or go straight.

"Then I thought: Bologna has given me so much. On top of that, the Champions League, the Coppa Italia I won and lifted as captain, the Europa League - if we hadn't faced Aston Villa, we would have reached the final - then the moments of friendship, even the bad things like the injury."

Ferguson is refusing to look too far ahead, but it's clear that he is determined to one day don a Rangers kit.
