Chris Sutton was impressed with what he saw from Celtic on Sunday as they comfortably defeated Motherwell 2-0 at Fir Park. Camilo Duran opened the scoring with a well-placed strike from the edge of the box, and Benjamin Nygren added to their lead in the second half.

The Bhoys lost three straight games before the break, so there was plenty of pressure heading into this game, especially with much more difficult games to come.

Motherwell were poor, but Celtic played with a real intensity throughout, and they didn't give their hosts any way into the game. Martin O'Neill described the performance of his team as 'terrific', and he said his side 'got back to basics' after a tough run of results that led to a crisis of sorts at the club.

But they got back to winning ways and protected their top spot on Sunday afternoon, and former striker Sutton, who was on commentary duty with Sky Sports, was impressed.

"As comfortable as I’ve seen a Celtic team at Motherwell," he posted on X. "Dominated from minute one. Outstanding performance but not ruthless enough in front of goal. Baur superb. Great to see Jota back after his long layoff"

It was, on the whole, a day of posisitives, and Sutton wasn't the only one to see Baur as one of Celtic's best players. Fresh from his Germany senior debut - and second appearance for his nation a couple of days later - the midfielder played some inspirational stuff in the middle.

Speaking in his press conference after the game, O'Neill said: "I thought he played really well today, really well. Maybe his best game for us so far. And he kept it going throughout the whole period of the match."

Baur controlled everything in the midfield and kept Celtic ticking over throughout, as well as playing some nice balls through to the attack. Although it also helped that Callum McGregor looked much better than in recent showings, allowing the midfielder to have a more balanced look about it.

Baur has generally been steady for the Bhoys since his arrival in the summer, and he looks to be a bargain signing overall. The German has struggled when being asked to play a more physical role against technically better and stronger midfields, but in his defence, that could be because he doesn't have a more dominant midfielder next to him.

Baur is brave on the ball and he is what Celtic thought he was going to be.
