The bad news keeps coming down the Celtic Way in light of yet another inept performance and defeat at the hands of our bitter rivals the Rangers.
Our entire club has been shrouded in negativity since the capitulation in Linz, and now, they have lost three games on the trot in quick succession. Twice against the Rangers at Ibrox and then at Celtic Park, plus a defeat to Ferencvaros in the Europa League opener sandwiched in between.
The international break should now give us a brief period of rest-bite, with the manager (if he stays) and his coaching staff getting the chance to rally the troops so to speak, and press the reset button on a campaign seems to be running away from us at an alarming pace.
Despite a number of high priced deals being concluded over the summer transfer window, with the likes of Kasper Hogh, Camilo Duran, Mika Baur and Haiseem Hassan all arriving, we ended the window relying on several low key signings, mostly the usual last minute loan deals to bulk up the areas of our squad that were in desperate need of improvement.
One such signing was Dutch teenage midfielder Joel van den Berg who was signed for a reported fee of £3.5 million from PSV Eindhoven. Our only permanent signing in a frenzied last minute flurry of transfer activity.
The 19 year old Dutch youth International has yet to make an appearance for the club, and yesterday the youngster was pictured in a protective boot to further compound our woes.
It’s hard to believe that a 19 year old with only six senior appearances to his name was going to be the answer to our midfield problems, but he was expected to be in and around the squad. That though is now very much at risk of being in the back burner as yet another injury worry emerges for the manager to contend with.
But it was again noted with interest that he was absent from Martin O’Neill’s match day squad, although that has now been explained through his apparent injury, which has yet to be confirmed or explained by the club. We only have the moon boot photo go on.
