Celtic's 3 biggest January needs if the transfer window opened today

Celtic have enjoyed a solid start to the season in terms of their league form, but they have left a lot to be desired in Europe. Martin O'Neill's men have a four point gap at the top of the Premiership heading into the second quarter of the season, but they are winless in the Europa League.

That speaks to a lack of true quality in O'Neill's squad, was clear to see throughout the summer, and while some good signings were made, it was obvious by the time the window closed that enough work was not done in terms of recruitment.

The winter window is still a couple of months away, and while we don't know to what extent Celtic will be willing to invest, especially if they are out of Europe, we have taken a look at the positions they would do well to address.

Holding Midfield

The holding midfield roles are by far Celtic's biggest problems. The Bhoys failed to replace Arne Engels and have really paid the price for it in Europe.

They don't have a dominant, ball-playing midfielder who can both confidently bring the ball out of defence and up the pitch, while also being quick to close down second balls on the edge of the box.

If Celtic are going to have the luxury of having an out-and-out attacking midfielder like Benjamin Nygren, they need a second pivot next to McGregor, especially in the European games.

Left-back

Celtic knew all summer that they needed to sign a quality and senior back-up for Kieran Tierney but did not do so. They ended up signing youngster Landon Emenalo, who we can't cast a judgement on, given he has only had one cameo appearance due to injury.

We will see what Emenalo can offer over the next month or so, but it's clear O'Neill would have liked a better option there, and Celtic have been lucky that Tierney has largely stayed fit despite a pile up of games. If that changes, then the Bhoys could be in trouble.

Goalkeeper

O'Neill doesn't seem to be confident in either of Celtic's goalkeeper options. Viljami Sinisalo has done okay, but O'Neill clearly isn't convinced, now giving Sam Johnstone the chance to impress, and he is not setting the world alight.

If neither of Celtic's goalkeepers are good enough to nail down the number one position, then they need to go and sign one.
