Celtic vs Rangers match preview
This week has been horrendous from a Celtic point of view, and another defeat here would turn it into an unmitigated disaster. Last Sunday, Martin O'Neill's team were steamrollered 3-0 by Rangers at Ibrox in the League Cup quarter-finals, putting in a lacklustre and chaotic performance, second best from start to finish.
Then, on Thursday night, the start of the Hoops' Europa League campaign did not go much better. The Scottish champions were ignominiously beaten 3-1 by Ferencváros at home, equalising through Mika Baur, only to concede again straight away. With games against far stronger opponents, on paper, still to come, Benfica, Beşiktaş, Marseille and Union SG to name but a few, the Celts are in serious danger of not even finishing in the top 24.
Thus, including the second leg of the Champions League play-off in Linz, Celtic have played three really important matches this season and lost all three, shipping 11 goals. If the Premiership leaders are defeated again here, before an elongated international break, O'Neill will be under huge pressure.
As for Rangers, they have had a free week to prepare for this derby, and will still be on cloud nine, following the win a week ago. Derek McInnes himself looked unlikely to last very long in his dream job not so long ago. He did not win either of his first two league matches in charge, before failing to qualify for any UEFA league phase, suffering historic defeats at the hands of Jagiellonia Białystok and then Jablonec on penalties.
Nevertheless, since then, the Gers have won four on the spin in the Premiership, and are now favourites to pick up the League Cup, facing Aberdeen at Hampden on Halloween. Victory here would end Celtic's perfect start to the Premiership season and cut the gap at the top to just two points. Martin O'Neill made four changes to his lineup in the Europa League, but they did not exactly perform any better, so what does he do now? Yang Hyun-jun remains at the Asian Games; Korea Republic's final group game against Saudi Arabia is on Tuesday, with the Gold Medal match on 3 October.
Meantime, Alistair Johnston remains sidelined and Kieran Tierney will be asked to start three matches in eight days, something he very rarely does. Auston Trusty could return at centre-back, after Liam Scales were very shaky against Ferencváros.
In goal, Sam Johnstone started last weekend's derby, before Viljami Sinisalo was restored on Thursday. Benjamin Nygren is set to return to midfield, while will Camilo Durán or Kasper Høgh lead the line. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can also return, having been suspended in mid-week.
Rangers team news
Having had no game in mid-week, there's little reason for Derek McInnes to change a winning formula. Rangers are without their two best strikers Youssef Chermiti and Lawrence Shankland due to long-term injury, but new signing Kevin Kelsy do bag his first for the club a week ago.
Elsewhere, Olwethu Makhanya continues to impress at centre-back, while Dan Neil will be donning the armband once more, having scored twice to oust Celtic from the League Cup.
