Celtic player ratings from dramatic Besiktas win as three get 9/10s
Celtic claimed a huge three points in the Europa League on Thursday night, dramatically beating Besiktas 3-2 at home to keep their hopes of progressing alive.
Celtic held firm in the first half, albeit they never really managed to threaten Besiktas. The first pivotal moment arrived shortly after the second half restart, when Jordan Lotomba rashly dived in for a slide tackle at the byline and conceded a penalty.
Sam Johnstone initially saved the penalty from Junior Olaitan, but the ball dropped just under the bar for a tap-in rebound.
Martin O'Neill made three changes on the hour-mark and within two minutes, Callum Osmand thumped home a strike from the edge of the box with his first touch.
Osmand wasn't done there, going on to bring down a long ball and play a perfect through ball into fellow substitute Camilo Durán to round the keeper and slot home.
Celtic were well on their way to a win, but with five minutes remaining, Besiktas captain Orkun Kocku came off the bench, returning from injury, and thumped one just inside the near post from range.
The drama didn't end there. Less than two minutes later, Kieran Tierney's shot deflected into the path of Durán, who reacted quickly to knock the ball home to take all three points.
Sam Johnstone - 6
Produced a fine save to deny Trossard. It may have been offside in the end, but it wasn't flagged. Initially saved the penalty but he was unfortunate to see the ball drop right back under the bar for a tap-in. The second goal flew in at the near post, which he will be disappointed with, but it was another good shot, with Celtic affording too much time again with a long shot.
Kieran Tierney - 7
A quiet game by his standards, but he was sound defensively, which was even more important than anything he was going to offer going forward in this game. When he did get forward late on, his long shot deflected into the path of Durán for the winner.
Cameron Carter-Vickers (Off at 75') - 9
Did well to cut out Leandro Trossard right in front of goal within the first 10 minutes. Carter-Vickers was brilliant all night here, thwarting Besiktas over and over with smart positioning and some really good blocks. A man mountain here.
Liam Scales - 5
Painfully clumsy at times. He's a danger at set-pieces, and he came close with a deflected header after the equaliser, and it must be said that he settled down a little in the second half, but he just needs to tidy things up.
Jordan Lotomba (Off at 60') - 5
Recovered very well to cut out counter attacks in the first half. He made a massive mistake by giving away a penalty in the second half. He almost made up for it with a 60-yard run but it came to nothing. Lotomba actually looked decent here, but that mistake was a big one, so his rating suffers.
Callum McGregor - 6
Did very will in the lead up to the Osmand goal, driving through and then cutting the ball across to the edge of the box. There are still positional question marks at times, though, and it showed for the equaliser, when he was again too slow to close down a long range shot.
Mika Baur - 7
Busy all night and worked his back-side off.
Benjamin Nygren - 6
Came close with an early sighter. He was also unlucky to see a powerful strike fly just over with around 15 minutes left. It didn't quite come off for Nygren, but he was a threat.
Sebastian Tounekti (Off at 60') - 6
Tounekti did okay here. It was a tight game in the first hour, but he looked after the ball and showed some threat. There was nothing special, but it was solid.
James Forrest (Off at 60') - 6
Similar to Tounekti. Forrest looked after the ball and showed intensity. It was too tight for him to find any real space, but Forrest was solid enough.
Kasper Hogh (Off at 75') - 5
The quality just isn't there at the moment. His passing is sloppy and he just doesn't have enough awareness of the game around him.
Substitutes
Camilo Durán (On at 60') - 9
Latched on to an Osmand through ball, rounded the keeper and slotted home with all the calmness in the world. He then scored the winner by reacting quickly in the box after a deflected shot. A true goalscorer is the Colombian.
Callum Osmand (On at 60') - 9
Scored a super strike with his first touch of the game. He then brought the ball down and played a superb through ball to Durán. Cameos don't get much better than this.
Colby Donovan (On at 60') - 7
Added some bite and fresh legs on the right.
Dane Murray (On at 75') - 6
Nothing to report, solid enough.
Haissem Hassan (On at 75') - 6
Busy enough and tested the keeper with a shot at the near post.
