Former Celtic managerial target Nicky Hayen has been sacked by Burnley following a disastrous start to the Championship season.

The Belgian was heavily linked with the Parkhead vacancy last season before Celtic eventually appointed Wilfried Nancy.

Hayen had emerged as a popular candidate among sections of the Hoops support after guiding Club Brugge to an emphatic 9-1 aggregate victory over Rangers in the Champions League play-offs.

However, the 46-year-old subsequently departed Brugge for Burnley, tasked with securing an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation.

His spell in England has now ended after just 12 league matches, with Burnley sitting 22nd in the Championship following one victory, five draws and six defeats.

Confirming his departure, the club stated: “Burnley Football Club has dismissed head coach Nicky Hayen with immediate effect. The Board has taken the decision following a disappointing start to the Championship season.”

Hayen’s short-lived tenure also saw him work with former Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate, who was part of the Belgian’s new-look squad at Turf Moor.
