Celtic fans could face major TV shake-up as SPFL confirms broadcasting plans
Celtic supporters could face a significant change in how they watch Scottish Premiership football after the SPFL confirmed plans to put its domestic broadcasting rights out to tender.
The league body has announced that broadcasters will be invited to bid for the rights to show Premiership matches in the UK from the 2029/30 season, potentially bringing an end to Sky Sports’ position as Scottish football’s primary television partner.
Sky currently holds the rights to broadcast up to 60 Premiership fixtures per season, while Premier Sports can show a further 22 matches.
However, both agreements are due to expire at the conclusion of the 2028/29 campaign, opening the door for rival broadcasters to compete for the next television contract.
The SPFL has also indicated it is willing to consider proposals involving a different number of live matches, meaning the amount of Premiership football available to watch could change under the next agreement.
For Celtic supporters, the decision could have implications for where they watch domestic fixtures, including Glasgow derbies and other high-profile Premiership encounters.
SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster believes securing competitive broadcasting agreements remains crucial to the financial stability of Scottish football.
He said: “Securing strong broadcast partnerships is an essential element in maintaining a balanced and sustainable income mix for the SPFL and its clubs.
“We anticipate strong interest from broadcasters in what is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most exciting national league competitions.”
Although Sky Sports could retain its existing position by securing another agreement, the tender process provides other broadcasters with an opportunity to acquire Scottish Premiership rights.
Any increase in the value of the next television deal could also provide a financial boost to Celtic and the other Premiership clubs through improved broadcasting revenue.
