Callum McGregor names Celtic problem that Martin O'Neill can easily fix
Celtic skipper Callum McGregor is well aware of the problems the Bhoys currently have with the way they play. The Bhoys are in good form in the league, only failing to win two games so far, and the most recent outing saw them draw with Dundee United at home.
Many fans were left unimpressed by that result, but there was context to it, and that was the fact The Terrors came into the game on the back of three wins in their last four, and this was Celtic's sixth game in less than three weeks.
It has been a busy time for Martin O'Neill's men, and it will get no easier over the next week or so, with three games in the next week from Sunday.
Next Thursday night, Celtic will take on Besiktas at home in the Europa League, and it is a must-win game if the Hoops have any hope of progressing to the next stage of the competition.
But having given up a lead and lost their third straight Europa League game last week, Celtic know they have issues to resolve. "I agree. You are seeing a lot of that. It’s not really having a nailed-on profile for each of the positions," McGregor told Celtic Player.
“The players behave like a winger, or they behave like a striker. You can get away with it for a few games but if it’s a striker playing as a winger, you are going to get that behaviour a lot of the time.
“You’ve got enough quality so you can score goals and get away with it. But we have to try to get the team functioning the way it should."
He added: "You’ve got enough quality so you can score goals and get away with it”, he continued. “But we have to try to get the team functioning the way it should.
“Then that will alleviate all the other problems that we are encountering, where it becomes a bit basketball, you lose control and spend the next 15 minutes trying to get possession back.
“You waste energy at that point and then when you need to get a goal, you are coming down as opposed to up the way.”
Martin O'Neill has a pretty easy fix for the issue of wingers playing wide. He could drop the out-of-form Kasper Hogh and play the in-form Camilo Durán in his preferred striker role.
