Benjamin Nygren makes bold Celtic Europa League claim after dramatic Besiktas victory
Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren believes his side fully deserved their dramatic 3-2 Europa League victory over Besiktas, insisting the Hoops showed the determination required to secure their first European points of the campaign.
Martin O’Neill’s side came from behind to defeat the Turkish outfit at Celtic Park on Thursday night, ending a run of three consecutive defeats in the competition.
Nygren returned to the starting XI after being surprisingly omitted from the weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Falkirk, playing the full 90 minutes and coming close to finding the net on several occasions.
Despite Celtic’s difficult start to the encounter, the Swedish international dismissed suggestions that nerves had affected the players, instead praising their resilience and attacking performance.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Nygren said: “Yeah, like you said, we fought very very hard today. In the end, I thought we earned the three points.
“Besiktas is a quality team, they have a lot of good players. I think we fought well during the whole game, and I think we created enough chances to score more goals than them.”
Asked whether Celtic’s players had been nervous or tense before the game, Nygren insisted that was not the case.
He continued: “No, no. I guess some games are like that in the beginning of games, but in the end, it must’ve been a fun game to watch.
“You always try to find the chemistry when there’s a couple of new boys in the team, but I think all of them did very good and I’m very happy for the three points today.”
Nygren also reflected on his own missed opportunities before turning his attention to Celtic’s remaining Europa League fixtures.
He added: “Yeah, nearly, but it’ll come. Today was a very important game. I think we now have it in our own hands. Four games to go, and now we need more wins.
“We go into every game to win it, and like I said, I think we earned it today against a good opponent. We just need to continue like this get more wins.”
